Chiado and Barrio Alto

Located next to the centre, these two Lisbon neighborhoods breathe art and culture.

Chiado is located between the Baixa and the Bairro Alto neighbourhoods, and is known as the "Montmartre" of Lisbon. Rebuilt after the fire of 1998, this neighbourhood is ideal to see by foot, such as Carmo Street, with the ruins of the Church of Carmo, and Garret Street.

The Barrio Alto represents the alternative style of Lisbon and also stands out for being the neighbourhood of the Fados.

You can reach these neighbourhoods, on foot, in the tram or in the elevator of Santa Justa or Da Gloria.

Praça do Comércio

This square is undoubtedly the best known in the country. In it you will discover different monumental buildings and two points of special interest:

-Arco triunfal da Rúa Agusta, which starts the most important street in the Baixa. The construction of this arch began 20 years after the earthquake of 1755, with the architect Veríssimo José da Costa.

- Equestrian statue of José I, Portuguese king who was in charge during the Lisbon earthquake. This statue has been the first statue of Portugal in an equestrian position located on public roads. It was made by Joaquin Machado de Castro.
